good news part 1

yeah, yeah, yeah!
wie ihr ja auf den folgenden bildern sehen könnt: meine chamaeleo calyptratus, eddi und sancho, haben sich am 14.05.2009 zum ersten mal gepaart. die zweite paarung erfolgte noch am gleichen tag und auch die nächsten zwei tage lang wurde sich mehrmals gepaart. jede einzelne paarung dauerte fünf bis zehn minuten, wobei sich sancho nicht gerade wie ein gentleman verhielt. nach drei tagen trennte ich die beiden dann schließlich, da eddi nun ihre graviditätsfärbung zeigte. jetz werd ich hoffentlich in den nächsten monaten zu meinen ersten befruchteten chamaeleo calyptratus eiern kommen...

as you can see on the following pictures my two chamaeleo calyptratus, eddi and sancho, copulated for their first time on the 14th of may, 2009. they copulated for another time this day in the evening and also for several times during the next two days.
every single copulation took about five to ten minutes of time and sanchos behaviour was not very gentleman-like.
after three days of copulating I separated them again, cause eddi is now showing her gravidity colours.
so now I will hopefully get fertilized chamaeleo calyptratus eggs in the next months...

eddi's eggs

yeah, dat for sure!

endlich positive nachrichten!
mein weibliches chamaeleo calyptratus eddi legte schließlich eier, ca. 5 wochen nach der paarung. wie man auf bild 1 erkennen kann, war eddi am ende ihrer trächtigkeit recht dick. man kann außerdem die eier erkennen, wenn man sich die hintere hälfte ihres körpers anschaut, sieht aus wie ne brombeere.
am 21. juni vergrub eddi ihre eier in einer tiefe von ca. 25cm. das ist immer recht stressig und sehr anstrengend, v.a. das einsammeln und anhäufen von erde auf der ablagestelle. dadurch sind die eier aber richtig sicher!

am folgenden tag grub ich die eier aus und legte sie in eine mit einer mischung aus perlit und vermiculit gefüllte schale. dabei achtete ich darauf, die eier nicht zu drehen. insgesamt fand ich 33 eier, drei davon waren etwas kleiner. eddi verlor während der eiablage 30g und wiegt nun 74g, daher dürfte jedes ei ca. 1g wiegen.

die schale mit eiern stellte ich in meinen selbstgebastelten inkubator (styroporbox, heizkabel 15w, thermostat mit tag-nacht-temperatur, wasserschale zwecks feuchtigkeit), damit sich die eier innerhalb von 5-8 monaten zu gesunden jungtieren entwickeln können. die nachttemperatur beträgt 23°C (für 14 stunden) und die tagestemperatur 29°C (für 10 stunden). außerdem herrscht eine luftfeuchtigkeit von ca. 75%.
jetz kann ich nur abwarten...

there are at least some positive things happening!
eddi, my female chamaeleo calyptratus, finally laid eggs 5 weeks after the copulation. as u can see on the first pic below, she was very thick at the end of her pregnancy. u can also recognize the eggs inside her body if u look to the rear half of her body, looks quite like a blackberry.
on june, 21st she buried her eggs in a depth of about 25cm. this always is very stressful for her and she got really exhausted after she collected all the earth around the closed "egg-hole" to pile it up right there. she really made sure that her eggs are safe!

on the following day I unearthed the eggs and put them into a box filled with a mixture of vermiculite and perlite not turning them or changing their position while moving them. there have been 33 eggs at all, 3 of them a little bit smaller ones. eddi lost about 30 gramms of weight, from 104g to 74g, so I guess the single eggs are weighing about 1.0g.

the eggs are now placed in my self-constructed incubator (polystyrene box, heat cable 15W, thermostat with day- and night-temperature, water box for humidity) in order to evolute to healthy chamaeleons in about 5-8 months. night-temperature is 23°C and lasting for 14 hours, day temperature is 29°C. relative humidity is about 75%.
so now I only can wait...
